Acanthus ilicifolius

Shrub with spikes of attractive pale lilac-blue flowers up to 20cm long. The leaves have spiny edges when the plants are growing in an open position, but can be totally spineless when growing in the shade
Growing Needs & Uses
Prefers a position in full sun, tolerating some shade. Grows best in heavier soils.Tolerant of flooding and of quite high levels of salt in the soil. Useful for hedging, screening around ponds.
Traditional / Historical Uses
Medicinal properties.
Natural Habitat
Occurs in mangroves.Typically a low growing understory shrub on mud, loam, silt-clay or sand on banks.
