Coastal curve
This garden feature showcases a carefully selected range of coastal plant species native to the Sarina region, reflecting the natural vegetation found along nearby shorelines and dune systems. These plants are uniquely adapted to thrive in harsh coastal conditions—tolerating salt spray, strong winds, intense sunlight, and nutrient-poor sandy soils.
A key role of these species is dune stabilisation. Their extensive root systems bind loose sand together, reducing erosion caused by wind and water while helping dunes maintain their shape over time. This natural barrier is essential for protecting inland environments, infrastructure, and freshwater systems from storm surges and coastal degradation.
The Coastal Curve also supports a diverse web of life. Flowering and fruiting native plants provide food and shelter for insects, birds, and small animals, including important pollinators. Groundcover species create safe nesting spaces, while shrubs offer protection from predators and extreme weather.
By recreating this coastal ecosystem within the community garden, the display not only highlights the resilience and beauty of local flora but also raises awareness about the importance of conserving coastal habitats. It encourages visitors to consider how planting native species in their own spaces can contribute to environmental sustainability, habitat restoration, and climate resilience.
Rainforest retreat
This garden space celebrates the richness and ecological importance of rainforest and riparian (water-edge) plant communities. These species thrive in sheltered, moisture-rich environments and play a vital role in maintaining healthy waterways and surrounding ecosystems.
Riparian plants act as natural filters, improving water quality by trapping sediments, nutrients, and pollutants before they enter creeks and rivers. Their root systems stabilise stream banks, reducing erosion and helping to prevent flooding impacts during heavy rainfall. The dense canopy and layered vegetation of rainforest species also regulate temperature, keeping these areas cool and humid while protecting soil from drying out.
Together, rainforest and riparian plants create critical habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, from insects and frogs to birds and small mammals. Fallen leaves and organic matter enrich the soil and support complex food webs, both on land and in the water.

Compost corner
This space demonstrates how garden “waste” can be transformed into a valuable resource. Plant trimmings, fallen leaves, and other organic materials from the garden are collected and added to compost bays, where they break down naturally into nutrient-rich compost that can be returned to the soil.
Composting plays a vital role in healthy garden systems. It recycles nutrients, improves soil structure, and increases the soil’s ability to retain moisture—reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers and extra watering. By diverting organic waste from landfill, composting also helps cut greenhouse gas emissions and supports a more sustainable, closed-loop system.
Residents can easily compost at home using a simple bin or heap. A good compost mix includes “greens” (such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and fresh plant cuttings) and “browns” (like dry leaves, cardboard, and small twigs). Keeping the pile slightly moist and turning it occasionally helps speed up decomposition. Over time, these materials break down into a dark, crumbly compost that can be used to enrich garden beds, support plant growth, and improve overall soil health.

This garden is designed to immerse visitors in the subtle and soothing sounds of nature. Carefully selected plants create gentle movement and natural acoustics—leaves rustle in the breeze, grasses whisper, and seed pods rattle softly, bringing the space to life through sound.
Beyond plant selection, the garden also supports wildlife that contribute to its soundscape. Flowering and sheltering species attract birds, insects, and other small animals, adding layers of birdsong, buzzing, and natural rhythms throughout the day.
The Sound Garden encourages visitors to slow down and listen, fostering a deeper awareness of the environment. By tuning into these natural sounds, people can experience a sense of calm and connection, while gaining an appreciation for how plant choice and habitat design can shape the atmosphere of a space.
Boomerang Garden
Shaped to reflect the iconic form of a boomerang, this garden represents connection—to land, water, and cultural heritage—while showcasing plant species native to the wetter environments around Sarina. Designed as a low-lying, moisture-rich area, it features plants that naturally thrive in damp soils, seasonal inundation, and along creek lines and wetlands.
These species play an important ecological role by slowing and filtering water as it moves through the landscape. Their roots help stabilise soil, reduce erosion, and improve water quality by trapping sediments and nutrients. During heavy rain, the garden can act as a natural sponge, absorbing excess water and supporting the surrounding garden system.
The Boomerang Garden also provides valuable habitat for wildlife, particularly frogs, insects, and birds, contributing to the biodiversity of the space. Its distinctive shape and planting design highlight both the environmental function of wetland ecosystems and the importance of respecting and learning from the natural patterns of the land.
